The Office of Student Care and Support in the Division of Student Affairs supports students’ holistic development by providing education and personal interventions, educating about personal advocacy and assisting with advocacy when appropriate, and coordinating resources and services for undergraduate and graduate students experiencing challenges. These challenges may include students who have chronic health issues, academic difficulties, mental health concerns, behavioral problems including substance abuse, or other issues that have or may have an impact on their college experience and success. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Student Care and Support. They work closely with the Director to provide this support and coordinate care for students who are referred to Student Care and Support. Referrals are generated by faculty and staff at the College, classmates, parents, self-referrals, or other concerned parties. The Assistant Director will serve as a primary point of contact for students of concern.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Receive and process concern referrals.
  • Meet regularly with students to create support plans, connect students with resources, and monitor their engagement with varied resources.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, which include the campus community, parents, and external partners.
  • Collaborate and work closely with key campus partners, including but not limited to Housing and Residential Education, Community Standards, Student Success, Student Accessibility Services, Academic Advising, Emerson Wellness Center, etc.
  • Maintain detailed records in Maxient regarding student cases, ensuring accuracy and privacy of information.
  • Identifying and responding to trends in student well-being.
  • Create, present, and participate in trainings and presentations with the campus community.
  • Evaluating and assessing the success of support efforts.
  • Participate in key campus events such as Orientation, Commencement, etc, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to perform the job effectively.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years working in a related field required.
  • Experience with crisis response, including the ability to analyze situations and thoughtfully implement effective solutions during times of distress required.
  • Experience with the administration of a student or customer records system and ability to utilize technology in the delivery of service required.
  • Direct experience working with college students in a supportive role is preferred.
  • Training in case management and/or mental health crisis management preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – This may be representative but not all-inclusive of the knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job.

  • Knowledge of appropriate responses and resources to students reporting suicidal ideation, chronic health issues, substance abuse, or other issues affecting their educational success.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal issues, current trends, and best practices that inform student case management in higher education.
  • Commitment to Emerson’s goal of dismantling systemic oppression, including racism, ableism, as well as other forms of power-based and identity-based harm.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with broad constituents, including students, parents, faculty, and other staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with members of the campus community.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, set priorities, achieve goals, assess complex situations, and maintain strong ethical and professional standards.
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking to select and interpret guidelines and address problems of considerable difficulty.

Compensation: $57,250.00 - $70,200.00 annually, commensurate with experience.

Grade of Position: 23-07E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25
