    Job Summary

    The Movement Science and Applied Exercise Science programs in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan invite applications for up to 3 new faculty positions of clinical assistant or clinical associate professor (non-tenure track), ideally commencing August 2025. We are seeking colleagues with exceptional experience in the field of exercise physiology and/or human performance (e.g., strength & conditioning) who are dedicated to mentoring learners with effective pedagogy.

    Successful candidates will be able to teach undergraduate core courses such as Exercise Physiology, Systems Physiology, laboratory sections, or Strength & Conditioning and related courses. Graduate-level courses will be assigned based on their area of expertise. The ideal candidate will provide innovative pedagogical approaches, the ability to facilitate student experiential learning, and mentor graduate student instructors (GSIs). Effort in these 9-month appointments consists of 75% teaching responsibilities and 25% engagement in administration, service, and scholarship over fall and winter terms. Administrative responsibilities will be based on the programs' needs, as well as the candidate's expertise and prior experience. Engagement in professional scholarship and participation in departmental, university, and/or community service is expected. The selected candidate will participate in curricular developmental initiatives, attend faculty meetings, and serve as a mentor as assigned and on other school or campus committees. A competitive salary will be offered, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

    General Information about the School of Kinesiology and the University of Michigan

    The School of Kinesiology is one of 19 independent academic units and one of seven health science schools and colleges within the University of Michigan. The school is led by Dean Lori Ploutz-Snyder and has 40+ tenure-line faculty, 12 clinical faculty, 23 lecturers, and approximately 1200 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students. In 2021, the School of Kinesiology relocated to a completely renovated building with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities in the heart of the University of Michigan Central Campus. The new building includes state-of-the-art facilities to support clinical exercise physiology teaching and research. This includes dedicated lecture and laboratory classrooms, a clinical exercise physiology research laboratory, and many other research laboratories and centers

    Required Qualifications*

    • Ph.D. preferred in kinesiology or a related field. While a doctoral degree is preferred, master's degree-holding candidates with a particularly strong pedagogical, clinical, research, or industry background are encouraged to apply. 
    • Two or more years of teaching in higher education or employment in an applied or clinical setting is highly desirable. 
    • Proven success in contributing to a positive workplace culture and the ability to consistently demonstrate our school's Core Values are necessary.
    • Preferred qualifications include:
      • Instruction of upper-level exercise physiology, systems physiology, or clinical exercise physiology course content with innovative classroom lab experiences; OR experience in the area of human performance such as strength & conditioning, sport science 
      • Experience and skills serving as a course coordinator, training GSI's on lab protocols and procedures, providing oversight of course lab sections, maintaining inventory of teaching lab supplies, pedagogical mentoring of GSI's curriculum development, contributing to new academic curricula, developing inclusive teaching initiatives, engagement in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and collaborative research and scholarship
