JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Summary
As a Director, Data Science - Indigo AI Innovation Lab, you will play a pivotal role in the advancement of machine learning and AI capabilities across the Alkermes enterprise. As our ML execution leader, you will oversee the technical execution of a portfolio of data science projects, providing hands-on support and guidance to a team of data scientists to ensure successful implementation of individual use cases that address business questions, enhance decision making, and optimize operations. By setting the technical direction, you will ensure these use cases deliver value and evolve from proof-of-concepts into scalable products and capabilities. Additionally, you will collaborate with senior leadership to shape the strategic direction of the AI Innovation Lab and Alkermes’ enterprise data science strategy, and contribute to the development of best practices, standards, and frameworks for data science within the organization. This role will be based in our Waltham location and work a hybrid office schedule. Responsibilities RESPONSIBILITIES Essential Areas of Responsibility
Technical Delivery:
Oversee technical execution of a portfolio of data science projects across functional areas, with a focus on the use of traditional machine-learning techniques Provide hands-on guidance to junior data scientists, ensuring delivery of production-quality and defensible machine learning approaches that produce analytically rigorous and value-accretive outcomes for business partners Set technical direction of projects, and plan for use of machine-learning techniques and approaches that will contribute to broader enterprise capabilities and products
Project Oversight:
Ensure portfolio of ML projects are executed on time and within budget, and serve as primary technical relationship holder for senior business stakeholders for duration of projects Manage project processes in collaboration with project manager, and work to follow best practices for both technical and business delivery Develop clear plans and establish business value of new project opportunities and contribute to prioritization of near-term options with Innovation Lab leadership Team Leadership:
Manage and mentor growing team of data scientists, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment Contribute to a culture of belonging, respect, team-focus, individual ownership, and performance within Innovation Lab Strategic Innovation:
Work with senior leadership to shape the strategic direction of the AI Innovation Lab Develop, document, and iterate on best practices, standards, and frameworks for data science execution within the organization Contribute to shaping Alkermes’ enterprise viewpoint on machine learning, strategic roadmap, and alignment of data science activities with corporate strategy Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Basic Qualifications:
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
MS, PhD, or equivalent degree in related field with minimum 10y of work experience in Data Science / Machine Learning – OR – BS or equivalent degree in related field with minimum 15y or work experience in Data Science or Machine Learning Related degree fields include Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, Physical Sciences Experience in the Life Sciences industry highly preferred Technical Knowledge/Skills:
Expert-level proficiency in Python, including production software development Deep understanding of traditional machine learning algorithms, statistical modeling, and data mining techniques, including classification/regression, time-series analysis, reinforcement learning, and operations-research, transformer, and other neural-network based architectures Knowledge of columnar OLAP-style SQL databases for (i.e. Snowflake) and data models. Understanding of data pipeline, ETL processes. Experience with distributed big-data frameworks such as Spark are a plus Familiarity with the AWS ecosystem, and comfort managing and working with remote environments Experience with claims, EMR, -omics, patent, and other life-science oriented data modalities is a plus Competencies:
Strong project management skills using Agile Scrum methodology Experience in senior business-stakeholder management, and ability to rapidly translate between technical requirements and domain-specific terminology, influence functional policies and approaches Ability to work in cross-functional teams and influence outcomes Effective in accomplishing multi-quarter and multi-year goals by working through others Experience leading and managing teams of data scientists and fostering both technical and business career development opportunities for team members Preferred Qualifications:
