WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL
· This position will be based out of either GPC HQ 241 Ralph McGill Boulevard, Atlanta, GA or The Energy Center at 3535 Colonnade Parkway, Birmingham, AL
· Travel expectations – Approximately 25% to 35% per year, as dictated by business need and field work at various plant/project sites. Travel to offices/sites in Southern Company Territory required with some overnight travel expected.
· Candidate must have the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with limited oversight and access to internet service when needed. Presence at office or project plant/site a minimum of 4 days per week is required.
JOB SUMMARY
Work daily with an established group of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers to provide engineering solutions and subject matter expertise across a wide variety of applications within Southern Company, including geotechnical site investigations, geotechnical engineering, dam safety, geoenvironmental engineering, coal combustion residual (CCR) impoundments and landfills, and earthwork construction support. Work to include but limited to:
· Perform geotechnical engineering calculations & analyses to support coal combustion residual (CCR) management projects, new retrofit or capital projects, transmission projects.
· Provide geotechnical consulting to all branches of Southern Company including the fossil, hydro, nuclear, and renewables fleets as well as gas and power transmission.
· Coordination of and/or participation in periodic dam safety and landfill inspections.
· Monitoring performance data from site instrumentation.
· Technical review and oversight of field drilling/testing.
· Development and/or maintain emergency action plans for surface and CCR impoundment dams.
· Review of studies and analyses performed by internal and external engineering groups/consultants.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
· Bachelor’s degree in engineering required (preferred in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering, or Civil with heavy geotechnical emphasis).
· Advanced degrees, including M.S., PhD, and/or MBA are desirable, but not required.
Licensure:
· Professional Engineer (PE) license in Georgia or Alabama, and/or ability to obtain through comity within 6 months of employment is required.
· PE license in other states within Southern Company territory preferred.
· Georgia Safe Dams Program Engineer of Record certification desirable but not required.
Experience:
Minimum of 7 years professional experience in geotechnical engineering with experience in the following areas:
· Landfill/surface impoundment experience, particularly related to Federal and State (Georgia and Alabama) CCR related regulations
· Dam safety oversight & inspections
· Geotechnical Drilling & in-situ testing
· Foundation capacity analysis, design and installation (shallow and deep)
· Proficiency in computing and modeling for deep foundation design, slope stability and seepage analysis
· Foundation construction/installation monitoring and inspections
· Geotechnical and environmental software
· Soil classification
· Laboratory test assignment and interpretation
· Sitework and fill placement
· Project siting
· Electric utility operations
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Excellent customer relations and conflict resolution skills
· Knowledge of dam design principles
· Solid waste/CCR management practices, including regulations and design
· Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
· Extensive walking on both level and sloping ground is required
