Job Summary
University Health Service (UHS) Laboratory obtains specimens for the department as well as Michigan Medicine Laboratories and other reference labs. The Phlebotomist provides exceptional customer service to patients, our UHS Laboratory team, and all UHS colleagues. The Phlebotomist supports the UHS Lab by obtaining blood specimens from patients, preparing specimens for distribution to various reference labs and performing front desk responsibilities.
Responsibilities*
Phlebotomy and Front Desk Duties (66%)
- Obtain blood samples through venipuncture
- Answer phones to answer general lab questions and route to appropriate area as necessary
- Communicate with providers to clarify orders and collection requirements
- Process add-on orders
- Obtain nasopharyngeal samples
- Keep blood drawing area supplies stocked
- Pickup specimens from clinics in building and bring to lab for processing
- Maintain HIPPA standards at all times
- Communicate with patients via phone and portal when repeat collections are necessary
- Other duties as assigned
Distribution (34%)
- Centrifuge, aliquot and package specimens
- Troubleshoot missing orders and results
- Bring specimens to proper areas for testing
- Notify the Reportable Disease Group of any Reportable Infections
- Centrifuge cleaning
Required Qualifications*
- High School Diploma or GED
- Phlebotomy experience
Modes of Work

Additional Information
Working conditions:
- On occasion, employee has to perform venipuncture in the clinic outside of the lab. The use of N-95 mask is required when performing venipuncture on patients with suspected certain infections.
Physical requirements:
- Employee is required to have required immunizations before starting work. Annual TB test and N-95 mask fitting is required.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.
Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2025 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY25-26 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
Relocation will not be offered for this position.
