Who will you be working with?

L&M Radiator, Inc. is a global designer, manufacturer, and distributor of MESABI cooling and heat transfer solutions that are custom-made for heavy equipment in the mining, oil, gas, construction and heavy industrial industries. We are looking for an individual to join our Research and Development team. The R&D Test Technician will work directly with our R&D team to test, develop, design, and problem solve prototypes, equipment, machines, tools and products. This role may also work with suppliers and other departments within our company such as Engineering, Maintenance, Assembly, Tubing, Welding, Machine Shop, Paint, and Steel Prep.

How will you make a difference?

As a member of the Research and Development Team, you will be responsible for testing radiator and component prototypes and assisting with other projects as directed by supervisor/manager. This position is designed for someone interested in Industrial Mechanical Technology. Someone who dabbles in different maintenance – machines, tools, heating/cooling systems. Skills such as welding, problem-solving, plumbing, HVAC, creativity, self-motivation, and communication are imperative to this role. A successful candidate will take initiative, like working independently, have experience using hand and power tools, and is knowledgeable in a variety of welding and fabrication skills including sheet metal work. Preferred knowledge in fluid power, process control, instrumentation, electrical maintenance, and integrated computer controls. This position reports to the R&D Manager on dayshift hours Monday-Friday.

  • HS Diploma or GED with 5 years of experience in a related field, or 2-year technical degree in electrical controls and maintenance or related field.
  • Strong mechanical ability and experience using power tools and forklift when necessary.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Machines that you have worked with.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Assemble, install and test coolers in wind tunnels.
  • Assemble test cells and use equipment such as pressure gages, thermocouples, load cells, pump stands and data acquisition hardware.
  • Collect and enter data as required per test plan and instructions.
  • Use a variety of software to control, monitor, analyze, record, and present test data.
  • Assemble, wire and solder test leads and sensors.
  • Fabricate and construct test models as per specifications.
  • Maintain field test equipment by checking calibration and making minor repairs or adjustments.
  • Calibrate and maintain testing equipment and related machinery in R&D department.
  • Coordinate, package and ship test equipment to external companies for calibration as needed.
  • Maintain and file documentation of test equipment and related hardware.
  • Backup to the Lab Technician position when needed and may assist as required.
  • Assist with assembly and electrical wiring of new production machines or prototypes as per print or other specifications.
  • May assist, within capabilities and qualifications, other departments.
  • Perform work in a safe manner and follow all safety guidelines/procedures.
  • Perform other work as required by supervisor/manager.
  • Intermittent extended hours or weekend work may be required to complete a project.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel is required and could include weekend travel depending on the project.

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • Wear correct PPE – earplugs, protective eye wear, steel-toed boots, and work provided uniform (gloves and welding equipment when necessary).
  • Lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Stand on concrete for 8-10 hours.
  • Practice and maintain safe working conditions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for Entry Level:

  • Must be detail-orientated, organized, and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must have good mechanical aptitude.
  • Reasonable knowledge of engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Communicate, in English, effectively and clearly by both written and verbal means.
  • Demonstrate maturity, intelligence, cooperation, and discretion.
  • Work effectively with fellow employees and independently.
  • Ability to learn engineering software programs.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Dependability under both supervised and unsupervised conditions.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, drug and background test.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Epicor, or similar ERP system.
  • Knowledge of National Instruments Labview or similar data acquisition software.
  • Industrial Mechanical Technology
  • Welding/Plumbing/HVAC experience.

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

This role is also eligible for a performance bonus.

Wabtec will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the U.S. for this opening. Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a drug screen (as applicable) and fitness for duty test (as applicable).

The hourly range for this role is between $28.00 - $35.00. The actual hourly rate offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands, and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
