Job Summary

The Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB), CCR, NCI, NIH invites applicants for a full-time Staff Scientist position. This position is for highly motivated individual with expertise and focus on molecular and functional genetic studies using preclinical models of pediatric and adult benign and malignant solid tumors. The POB is vibrant, multidisciplinary research community conducting innovative, high-impact bench-to-bedside research and close collaboration between physicians and scientists with a primary focus on pediatric and young adult cancers. The POB directs an active clinical trials program translation innovative clinical trials with novel endpoints and outcome measures for children and adults with tumors of unmet need.

The successful candidate will have the primary responsibility of leading the preclinical program of POB, and in particular the Tumor Evolution and Genomics Section. Key responsibilities include (1) the design and conduct of in vitro molecular and functional genomic assays to discover oncogenic mechanisms and vulnerabilities in pediatric benign and malignant tumors; (2) design and conduct of drug screening efforts to discover new therapeutic agents and therapeutic combinations for the treatment of pediatric benign and malignant tumors; (3) design and conduct of in vivo preclinical testing of novel therapeutic regimens; (4) data analysis, summarization and presentation of generated laboratory data and (5) oversight, guidance, and training to collaborators, postdoctoral students and other students, and personnel in the analysis of sophisticated molecular and genomic studies and maintenance of general laboratory organization and regulatory compliance. In addition, the staff scientist will provide guidance and advice to investigators in POB and CCR on new preclinical projects including utilization of novel genetic and molecular techniques and analysis. The candidate will participate in preclinical and translational meetings, assist with the development of new preclinical studies, drug screening, data analysis, and data presentation. The candidate will be expected to represent the POB at national and international meetings and to independently prepare and publish manuscripts resulting from preclinical research projects.

Required Qualifications

Successful candidates should have a strong track-record of publications demonstrating contributions to cancer biology, molecular mechanisms of cancer and preclinical drug development. Detailed knowledge of both human, and mouse preclinical models of pediatric cancer models is required. A high degree of ability to work independently on multiple projects and complete projects with acceptable timeline is required. Ability to work in a team and interact with scientists and clinicians in the intramural and extramural scientific communities. Previous hands-on experience discovering and optimizing small molecules for the treatment of cancer will be required. The individual will have strong logical/analytic thinking skills and expertise in working with multiple team members.

Candidates must possess a Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S, D.M.D., D.V.M. or equivalent degree in a biomedical, behavioral, or related science of have been certified by a university as meeting all the requirements leading to such a doctorate.
