WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Gender Equity Advisor for Freshwater Fisheries ("Advisor") advises the team to develop and implement the Freshwater Fisheries strategy within the Global Provide Food and Water team at TNC. The global Freshwater Fisheries strategy is focused on supporting inland fisheries under Indigenous and community leadership, often in low- and middle-income countries such as in the Amazon Basin and in sub-Saharan Africa, where we seek to achieve biodiversity and human well-being outcomes, and where women play an important yet often underappreciated role.
The Advisor supports global strategy leadership by assisting with and/or managing priority projects and serves as a technical advisor on topics related to gender equity. This may include providing expert gender advice to field staff, collecting data, conducting literature reviews, writing reports, managing contracts with specialists, and participating in national and international dialogues on matters related to gender equity. The Advisor works closely with other TNC staff within global teams, including the Global Equitable Conservation team, as well as field colleagues and external actors within the NGO, government, and intergovernmental sectors, to help drive equitable implementation of the Freshwater Fisheries strategy.
The Advisor collaborates with staff in different countries in their support to fishing communities to assess and document their gender equity related needs. The Advisor also tracks corporate practices, governmental policies and decisions, and the practices or views of other stakeholders involved in the Freshwater Fisheries strategy and their potential impact on organizational conservation goals. They may develop and/or advise TNC communications, marketing and philanthropy staff on issues related to the gender equity within the Freshwater Fisheries strategy and related issues. This position involves both domestic and international travel of up to 25%.
